The challenge of using language with sensitivity and respect for those of different cultures and communities is that no matter who you are you are not a member of every community or culture, and therefore are not aware of the customs and colloquialisms of every culture. It is imperative that all media professionals make a concerted effort to use respectful language towards all cultures. Not just in respect for basic human decency, but for professionalism. Mistakes will be made, we are all simply human, but a mistake can be forgiven by effort. We cannot pretend to know or understand every culture that surrounds us, but we can all try to be respectful. It is our obligations as media professionals and as human beings.
