In JMC 1013, the prerequisite for JMC 2033, students learned the history and present environment of all media formats. JMC 2033 Writing for (Multi) Mass Media builds upon this information and allows students to put their knowledge into practice. The main purpose of this course is to develop student's writing abilities and is designed to accommodate all of the majors offered by The Gaylord College of Journalism.
The course is divided into two aspects: lecture and lab. The lecture portion is taught by Dr. Elanie Steyn with assistance from Sarah Cavanah. In lecture, which meets on Tuesday's and Thursday's from 10:30am to 11:20, students are given weekly quizzes over the assigned readings. It is stressed that students complete the reading before coming to class since the quizzes take place in the first ten minutes of class and account for 25% of their overall grade. In the lab portion of JMC 2033, which is taught by multiple professors, students are challenged to practice the skills they acquire in lecture and through the readings. The lab portion accounts for 50% of student's grades and consists of blogs, grammar practice assignments, and numerous writing assignments. In addition to conducting the lab, lab instructors also act as advisers to the students and offer assistance as needed.
By the end of the course students should be more adequately prepared to enter their perspective majors. Having mastered the ability to communicate with words and conduct research properly, students will be much more prepared for their future professions, whatever they may be.
