JMC 2033 is a college course required by the Gaylord College of Journalism. It is designed to teach students to better understand and progress in the techniques of writing for the mass media. Its primary goal is teaching students the fundamentals of media writing including, informing, persuading, and entertaining the audience, including the audience of both the written and broadcasted media. It stresses the importance of writing in all branches of mass communications; however, it also emphasizes the importance of research and correct factual information.
Many would say that some areas of the media do not require exact writing proficiency; however, Gaylord College acts otherwise. It created this course to display the need for accurate writing throughout all branches of media, with an emphasis on respecting the diversity of the audience that all branches cover, including people of different races, ethnicities, and even different cultures, or unique subcultures within one’s society.
The course lays out a specific set of goals it wishes its students to be proficient in before they move forward in the college. These include writing improvement, understanding the specific conventions of writing for specific outlets, understanding the core values of the professions, building media literacy, and even developing professional skills. Each and every one of these goals is there for students to aspire to so that they too can aspire to be the great media writers of tomorrow and become successful in the world of mass communications. JMC 2033 is there to create the news of tomorrow.
